2019—the service today

In March 2018, M & H Coaches succeeded Stagecoach on the 1/X1/2. The service today carries over 60,000 passengers per annum including free travel concessionaires, pupils, students and farepaying passengers. That’s about four times the combined population of Ruthin and Mold. The distance covered is over 100,000 miles per annum, equivalent to about four times around the world or about 600 times longer than the Offa’s Dyke path which the bus routes cross. About a quarter of passengers live in Mold, a fifth in Ruthin and a quarter in the villages. In March & April 2019, the County Councils asked passengers what they thought of their 1/X1/2 bus service. Passengers valued the punctual service offered, the new buses and the drivers themselves. Above all, though, they said that the one thing they liked most was the journey to and from Chester. Overall, 70 per cent of those surveyed felt that the service was “excellent” and 30 per cent “very good”.  In 2018, M & H Coaches purchased brand new buses for the service, these being the first new vehicles operating on all journeys since 1919. They were Wrightbus Streetlites manufactured in Northern Ireland and they feature audio-visual bus stop announcements, air suspension, seat belts and free wi-fi. The engines are to the highest diesel Euro 6 standards. The Ruthin to Mold service remains one that is financially supported by both Denbighshire and Flintshire councils, as it has been since 1971, for a total to date of 48 years. The current timetable is broadly as that introduced in 2012. Established in 1984, M & H Coaches began operating substantive local bus services in 1994, the first being the Service 14 from Denbigh to Mold. They currently run 20 vehicles, of which nine are service buses, five of which were acquired brand new. In addition to buses between Ruthin, Mold and Chester, M & H also serves Ruthin to Denbigh via Llandyrnog and the Denbigh town service. M & H also operates in the Rhyl, Abergele, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno areas. M & H has previously operated services between Denbigh, Ruthin and Wrexham.
